چکیده

The importance of the photon-photon pair production process (γ + γ′ → e+ + e−) to form pair production cascades in pulsar polar caps is investigated within the framework of the Ruderman-Sutherland vacuum gap model. It is found that this process is unimportant if the polar caps are not hot enough, but will play a non-negligible role in the pair formation cascades when the polar cap temperatures are in excess of the critical temperatures, Tcri, which are around 4×106K when P = 0.1s and will slowly increase with increasing periods. Compared with the γ −B process, it is found that the two-photon annihilation process may ignite a central spark near the magnetic pole, where γ − B sparks can not be formed due to the local weak curvatures. This central spark is large if the gap is dominated by the “resonant ICS mode”. The possible connection of these central sparks with the observed pulsar “core” emission components is discussed.

Gamma-Ray Pulsar Visibility

PSR J0437-4715 is a millisecond pulsar (MSP) thought to be “pair formation starved” (having limited pair cascades due to magnetic photon absorption). Fortunately the general relativistic (GR) electrodynamical model under consideration applicable to this pulsar have few free parameters. We model PSR J0437-4715’s visibility [1], using a 3D model which incorporates the variation of the GR E-field ...

Condensed Surfaces of Magnetic Neutron Stars, Thermal Surface Emission, and Particle Acceleration Above Pulsar Polar Caps

Recent calculations indicate that the cohesive energy of condensed matter increases with magnetic field strength and becomes very significant at magnetar-like fields (e.g., 10 keV at 3 × 10 G for zero-pressure condensed iron). This implies that for sufficiently strong magnetic fields and/or low temperatures, the neutron star surface may be in a condensed state with little gas or plasma above it...

X - Ray Emission from the Planet Pulsar B 1257 + 12

We report the detection of the millisecond pulsar B1257+12 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In a 20 ks exposure we detected 25 photons from the pulsar, with energies between 0.4 and 2.0 keV, corresponding to the flux F X = (4.4 ± 0.9) × 10 −15 ergs s −1 cm −2 in this energy range. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law model with photon index Γ ≈ 2.8 and luminosity L X ≈ 2.5 × 10...

Pulsar radio emission is believed to be originated from the electron-positron pairs streaming out from the polar cap region. Pair formation, an essential condition for pulsar radio emission, is believed to be sustained in active pulsars via one photon process from either the curvature radiation (CR) or the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) seed photons, or sometimes via two photon process. In pu...

X-ray pulsar radiation from polar caps heated by back-flow bombardment

We consider the problem of the thermal X-ray radiation from the hot polar caps of radio pulsars that show evidence of E × B subpulse drift in radio band. In our recent Paper I, using the partially screened gap (PSG) model of inner acceleration region we derived a simple relationship between the drift rate of subpulses observed in a radio-band and the thermal X-ray luminosity from polar caps hea...
